Everything about Langbaurgh-on-tees totally explained

The borough of Redcar & Cleveland is a unitary authority in the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, England consisting of Redcar, Saltburn-by-the-Sea, Guisborough, and small towns such as Brotton, Skelton and Loftus. It had a resident population of 139,132 in 2001, and is part of the Tees Valley economic area. It is represented in Parliament by the barrister Vera Baird (Labour) for the Redcar constituency and by Ashok Kumar (Labour) for the Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland constituency.
The district was created in 1974 as the borough of Langbaurgh, one of four districts of the new non-metropolitan county of Cleveland. It was formed from the Coatham, Eston Grange, Kirkleatham, Ormesby, Redcar and South Bank wards of the county borough of Teesside, along with Guisborough, Loftus, Saltburn and Marske-by-the-Sea and Skelton and Brotton urban districts, from the North Riding of Yorkshire. The borough was named after the ancient Langbaurgh wapentake of Yorkshire. On January 1 1988 the borough was renamed as Langbaurgh-on-Tees.
Cleveland was abolished on April 1, 1996, with its districts becoming unitary authorities. At this time Langbaurgh-on-Tees was renamed Redcar and Cleveland.
With typical political confusion associated with the Teesside region the areas south of the Tees are designated as part of the ceremonial/geographical county of North Yorkshire whilst the whole region, as Tees Valley, exists alongside Durham, Tyne and Wear and Northumberland to form the North East region.
